The season includes round-trip voyages from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and point-to-point sailings from Lisbon, reaching western islands like El Hierro and Porto Santo that larger ships rarely touch.

On Lanzarote, you wake to a moonscape. In the Protected Natural Landscape of la Geria, malvasía grape vines grow in funnels of black volcanic ash. Further inland, Timanfaya's petrified lava fields run toward geysers that still bring heat to the surface.

The western islands are greener. On La Gomera, Garajonay National Park shelters a UNESCO laurel cloud forest barely changed in millions of years. After dark on La Palma, you’re beneath a certified Starlight Reserve, with the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory high on the ridge and one of the starriest skies in the world overhead.

And then there's Funchal in Madeira, wholly Portuguese, with fortified wine lodges along the harbor and wicker toboggan rides down from the hilltop village of Monte.
