Wheels keep turning on river cruises

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority did a study years ago to determine the viability of adding shore power to Ogden Point. At the time it was determined to be too expensive, but things have changed, and the desire to sell itself as a homeport to cruise lines would appease residents if the vessels were not releasing carbon dioxide.

Port Metro Vancouver has been using shore power technology since 2009, saving 2,656 tonnes of carbon dioxide from 76 ships.
The port of San Diego is installing solar panels on the roof of the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal to reduce its carbon footprint. It anticipates offsetting approximately 70 percent of the building’s energy consumption. Installation of 630 panels began last month and should be completed by the end of June.

AmaWaterways and Backroads announced this week an expanded 2017 line-up of river cruise departures. The companies will offer more than 100 sailings in 2017, further developing their growing alliance to bring active adventure biking, walking and hiking tours to their river cruise destinations.
In 2016, AmaWaterways and Backroads debuted the only river cruise biking trips on the Rhine, Seine and Portugal’s Douro rivers, providing travelers with an interest in history and culture the opportunity to cycle between the beaches of D-Day and small, charming European villages.
Royal Upgrade
Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 has just completed a refurbishment costing $132 million and sailed into Southampton yesterday flanked by the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria ships, before heading to New York.
