Newfoundland

St. John's One of the oldest cities in North America, St. John's is a place like no other. Located in a picturesque harbour that has been carved from granite, and surrounded by hills running down to the ocean, the place that is affectionately known as "The Rock", combines old and new, city and nature. The quaint side streets are lined with buildings that are a kaleidoscope of colour, and the people are about as warm and welcoming as they come. Harbour Drive, which skirts the northern bank of St. John's Harbour, provides a wonderful view of the ships from all over the world that tie up to the wharf and of the often-feverish activity that accompanies them. The wharf is as lengthy as Harbour Drive and it is possible to walk to the edge for close-up views of the vessels. Check out the Fort Amherst Museum, which features the first lighthouse in the province, or the Johnson Geo Centre and learn about the area's four billion year old geological past. Better yet, tuck into one of the many local pubs and take in some traditional music.

Dramatic views and friendly locals - a down home vacation
Be seduced. Tucked in around the beautiful hills and granite cliffs of the harbour, St John's stunning scenery and down home charm seduce visitors year after year. See the spectacular sights. Stroll down the downtown streets past houses painted in a rainbow of colours. Head to Signal Hill for breathtaking views. Wander through the narrow streets of Quidi Vidi to get a feel of St John's fishing port roots. Visit the Provincial Museum to learn about Newfoundland and Labrador's long history. Do the best of St John's. Drop into the Gardens at Memorial University then have a picnic or play mini-golf with the kids at Pippy Park. Watch for whales as you hike the trails at Cape Spear. Do a pub crawl or just settle in for some fine Celtic fiddling at the bars along George Street. Book your flight to the right city. Be sure to choose St John's, Newfoundland (not Saint John, New Brunswick) when you book your flight. Hotels are conveniently close to most of the sights, but if you rent a car be prepared for winding, steep roads outside the downtown core.
