Overview

Roatan is located in Honduras and it is also the largest of the Bay Islands. This island is well known for scuba diving. A reef also surrounds the island that attracts fishes and snorkelers. Roatan has a lot of friendly people and also the weather is sunny all year round. The island also has animals such as parrots, monkeys and iguanas.

Entry/Exit Requirements

A passport is required to travel to Roatan Island. The passport should be valid six months beyond the date of departure. You can stay up to three months without a tourist card. A visa is not required but if visitor wants to travel more than 90 days it is required.

Weather

It is humid year round in Roatan but there are also some rainy seasons. The rainy seasons are from June to July. There is also a winter rainy season which is from October to February. The weather can change at any time from hot and muggy to being cool. A jacket is needed especially in the rainy seasons.

Things to know

Ladies should not travel alone late at nights.

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in care of strangers.

Do not walk in unpopulated or isolated areas.

Keep passports and travel documents secure at all times.

Food

Roatan has a wide variety of dishes on its island. Blue crabs are famous for eating and also iguanas. Seafood is also popular on the island for example the conch soup. Fruits such as pineapples and bananas are famous on the island. Bananas are also a major crop of Honduras.

Land Adventure

Horseback riding

It is time to do something different than lying in the sun on the beach side. It is the perfect time to go horseback riding. The ride starts from the beach and also goes along through scenic areas. Some rides also take you along the Roatan’s reef which is an amazing view.

Roatan Zip lining

Zip lining above treetops is a fun activity to do with friends and family. Zip lining at heights 262 m (860ft) while looking down at the beautiful beaches and coastline of the island. This experience is fun and leaves you with great memories. Tours last up to three hours.

Attractions

Arch’s Iguana Farm and Marine Park

There are over 4000 different types of iguanas at this park. The iguanas here are able to walk free in a protected environment. Iguanas grow up to four feet tall. Visitors can get close up with the iguanas and also feed them. Other animals are at the park also such as monkeys and sea turtles.

Carambola Gardens

This garden is the perfect place for hiking, bird watching and also nature studies. Along the trails are different flowers such as orchids, medicinal plants, fruits and the popular “chocolate tree”. There is also a wild side in the gardens where you can watch monkeys play.

Roatan is a beautiful and unique island. The weather is perfect to travel at any time and also the island is warm and has a lot of friendly people.
