PEI PUZZLED Silversea Cruises cancels visit to Summerside

In September 2014 Silversea Cruises announced that Summerside Port in PEI was among 19 new ports to be visited by the cruise line in 2016. The Silver Whisper was due to arrive this week, but with a week’s notice the port of call was cancelled. The captain felt that the channel waters were too shallow to safely navigate the ship to shore.

"The details that have been released indicated that they felt that coming into the harbour was a little more of a challenge than the captain wanted to deal with," Summerside Mayor Bill Martin said. "I really don't understand that. We have all kinds of shipping that comes into our harbour. I'm a sailor; I know the harbour very well. The channel's very well marked. All kinds of depth. I really don't understand that rationale."
The ship was carrying 382 passengers.
Arnold Croken, president of the Summerside Port Corporation was informed of the decision to cancel by Silversea Cruises.
Coken said, “We had people working on preparations for this from Summerside right through to Tignish. Our whole object here is to get cruise passengers into Prince County. So it’s extremely disappointing on that side of things.”
This is just a set back. Croken will be working with Silversea Cruises and other cruise lines to position the port for visitors from larger vessels in the future.
