Split Travel Guide

  • Set between sea and mountain, Croatia’s second-largest city strikes the right balance: traditional yet playful, historical yet modern. Stroll through the ancient Diocletian’s Palace, then walk out onto the bustling Riva Promenade. Gaze at beautiful art at the Gallery of Fine Arts, and admire the picturesque Adriatic Sea on an island-hopping cruise. Explore culture at the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, and delight in the quirky exhibits at Froggyland. In short, there’s something for everyone.

Discover Split

Island-hopping from Split

Set off for a day of island-hopping from the Port of Split. Hvar is lovely beaches, olive groves and lavender fields as well as vibrant culture and photo-worthy architecture. Brac is known for its white stone and pebbled beach that stretches out languorously into the turquoise waters of the Adriatic. As for Bisevo, it’s home to the famous Blue Cave.

Beaches and promenade

Riva Promenade, which runs between Diocletian's Palace and the Adriatic Sea, is a social gathering place teeming with music, cafés, and restaurants. Bacvice Beach is a popular destination to soak up the sun or cool off in the Adriatic. Firule, a stone’s throw to the east, offers fine sand and natural shelter—great for families with young kids.

Museums for all

See amusing dioramas of frogs shooting pool, getting a shave, and more at the quirky Froggyland. The Gallery of Fine Arts boasts great art by local and international artists. The Ivan Mestrovic Gallery is devoted to the celebrated Croatian sculptor, while the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments is dedicated to preserving Croatian artefacts.

Historical must-sees

Diocletian's Palace is Split’s main attraction. The colossal Roman structure and UNESCO World Heritage Site was even seen in Game of Thrones (themed walking tours are available). Within its walls, you’ll find the remarkably well-preserved Cathedral of Saint Domnius. The Diocletianus Aqueduct is a reminder of Roman ingenuity, while the Church and Monastery of Saint Francis is a quiet place to admire treasures such as the Gothic crucifix.
