The Healthy Flyer
When travelling, we often consider the health risks and precautions we can take while we’re at our destination. But, in many cases, you can’t get where you’re going without spending a few hours hurtling through the sky at 35,000 feet. That all-important flight can pose its own health issues. Here are a few tips to staying well while you’re in the air.
Be aware of the air
The cabin pressure is so strong when you’re that high up that there’s less available oxygen in the air. Breathing can become laboured. It’s recommended that you take long, relaxed breaths while flying.*
Avoid deep vein thrombosis Travellers who are fit and well probably don't need to worry too much about this condition. However, on long flights some passengers could be at risk, potentially forming blood clots in their legs which could travel to their lungs and impair blood flow to their heart. To help avoid this, try standing up and walking for several minutes every hour or so. You can also do simple leg exercises to keep your blood flowing, such as pointing your toes toward the floor and then the ceiling, and moving your feet around in circles. If you have a history of blood clots, ask your doctor if you should consider wearing compression stockings during the flight. Also drink plenty of liquids and avoid too much alcohol.
Strengthen your immune system
When you’re in a closed environment with dry air, as you are during a flight, illnesses can spread very easily. Avoiding foods with high sugar content can help your body fight off bacteria more effectively.
