JOB SCAMS ON THE INTERNET

Job seekers beware. A number of countries have warned their citizens to exercise caution when applying for jobs on cruise ships via the internet. The International Transport Workers Union has also posted warnings of on-line scams offering fake jobs in the cruise industry.

The Bahamian Department of Labour is warning its citizens that fraudsters have recently posted job vacancies for the Costa Cruise Line Australia. The government is imploring people not to forward any money in the recruitment process of any job found on line. They are also telling people who are presently employed not to tender their resignation in pursuit of any vacancy being offered by Costa Cruise Line Australia until they are validated. The website Cruise Ship Jobs acknowledges that most cruise ships rely on cruise recruitment agencies to help screen and interview job seekers. Applicants should check the authenticity of these partners on the websites of the cruise lines.

They have offered tips to help people avoid falling victim to a job scam, suggesting that legitimate cruise lines do not collect fees from job applicants to be considered for positions and any suggestion of sending money to speed up the process is wrong. Cruise lines do not collect money from applicants for uniforms and medical expenses. Emails that offer employment before applications are filled-out are scams. Those who do respond to job offers and then present their personal information will be vulnerable to criminal activity.

Scammers illegally ask for copies of passports and funds for the services of an immigration lawyer to process work permits. The website itself may suggest disingenuous business. Poor grammar, spelling and punctuation errors and an unprofessional appearance of the website are signs of a fake set-up. Authentic cruise line recruiting sites do not use free web-based email accounts to respond to, so yahoo or Hotmail email accounts should be treated with skepticism.

Job seekers are urged to do a little bit of fact finding before applying for jobs on-line. They should check to make sure that the agency they will be responding to, is in fact authorized by the cruise line.
