WRONG RUNWAY

The US National Transportation Board is investigating an incident that happened last week, when a Delta Flight 2845 from Minneapolis to South Dakota landed safely, but at the wrong airport.

The Airbus A320 was scheduled to touch down at Rapid City Regional Airport, but landed instead at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Delta said in a statement.
The airports are in close proximity (16 km apart) and their runways point in the same direction; from northwest to southeast. Upon landing at the base, air force personnel boarded the plane to do an inspection, releasing a statement saying that base officers “followed the proper procedures to address the situation” and were upholding the safety of those at the base and the passengers.
The flight crew was removed from duty until the results of an investigation are complete and the plane resumed to the correct airport within a few hours.
The airlines stated, "Delta will fully cooperate with that investigation and has already begun an internal review of its own."
The airline said it has "offered a gesture of apology for the inconvenience" to customers affected, but no specifics were given.
