United Airlines has announced the suspension of service from Edmonton to Chicago and San Francisco effective the end of the month. The Houston to Montreal service will be dropped at the same time. The cancelled routes are part of a number of suspensions announced by the airline, in an attempt to be profitable.

The Edmonton International Airport spokesperson has indicated that the loss is due to the economy and the low Canadian dollar and United spokesperson Jonathan Gerin conceded, “It was a market that wasn’t meeting our expectations that we had set for it.” Industry experts say the airline will focus on more hubs with better performance; and destinations where they are the only US based carrier to offer direct flights to and from American cities. Delta cancelled its Minneapolis - Regina route effective July 31.

United announced last week that it will end its route from Houston to Lagos, Nigeria, the carrier's only flight to Africa. Delta will be the only American airline to offer nonstop service between the US and Africa. This will also be effective at the end of the month.
