There is an itinerary change on the Carnival Vista

When Seattle’s Pier 666 began renovations last fall, people were concerned that the commotion would drive away a popular resident. However, it turned out that work was to the interior of the terminal only and didn’t cause a displacement of Tripod; the three legged raccoon.

To the relief of locals, Tripod showed her face this week after months of absence. With her missing front paw she is now back to the business of mooching – especially for fried eggs – said to be her favourite.

Carnival drops Izmir

There is an itinerary change on the Carnival Vista. All voyages through October will have the call to Izmir replaced with Kusadasi. This is in response to a US government travel warning to southeastern Turkey. Many other cruise lines have already eliminated the port of call until further notice.

The US Department of State posted a warning on its website: Effective March 29, 2016, the Department of State ordered the departure of family members of US government personnel posted to US Consulate in Adana and family members of US government civilians in Izmir and Mugla provinces, and restricted official travel to Turkey to “mission-critical” travel only.

The Canadian government’s travel advisory was updated May 11 and says: There is no nationwide advisory in effect for Turkey. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution due to crime, the threat of terrorist attacks and ongoing demonstrations throughout the country.

That's the Spirit

The Norwegian Spirit missed a port of call in Mykonos last Friday having been delayed by an event in the Ionian Sea Mediterranean. The Italian Coast Guard asked for assistance with a boat rescue where a refugee on board needed urgent medical attention.

The ship’s doctor examined a pregnant refugee and had her transferred by helicopter to a medical facility in Sicily once she was in stable condition. The delay forced a cancellation of the call to Mykonos and gave passengers a day at sea before they arrived in Piraeus on May 14.

Sail the Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises announced another epic voyage to circumnavigate the globe in 2018 with an itinerary that explores destinations across the Southern Hemisphere. The 137-night Navigate the World voyage will set sail aboard Seven Seas Navigator, which recently underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment.

Setting sail January 8, 2018, the 38,528-nautical-mile sojourn will begin and end in Los Angeles, taking a southerly route to explore the world’s most exquisite destinations, visiting five continents, 28 countries and 64 ports of call – including 28 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The 490-guests onboard will be able to enjoy a vast array of complimentary and unlimited shore excursions.

It's been awhile

The president of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation, Aleksey Rakhmanov has announced intentions to build the country’s first cruise ship since the fifties. No details have emerged on the size of the vessel or the customer.

Since Turkey and Egypt have become off-limits for Russian tourists, there has apparently been a tremendous hike in bookings for cruising inside the country.

The most popular destinations have been river cruises from Moscow to St Petersburg and Kazan.
