Key senators are proposing that the US government standardize the way airlines disclose fees for basic services like checked bags and seat assignments so passengers can more easily comparison-shop fares.

The proposal is part of an airline policy bill introduced Wednesday by Republican Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, chairman of the Senate commerce committee, and Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida. The bill would also require the government to set product safety standards for small drones.Airlines would also have to return fees for bags that are lost or delayed, and automatically refund fees for services purchased but not received like seat assignments or early boarding under the bill. The compromise proposal doesn't go far enough some senators, who want to limit airline charges.
