The partnership of two high tech companies may allow cruise ships to resolve mechanical difficulties and perform regular maintenance in an efficient and timely way. The hope is that 3D Scanning AS and 3Discovered technology can diagnose a problem, determine a solution and provide the parts for the repairs instantly thereby avoiding the disasters of ships disabled at sea.

3D Scanning AS provides high tech 3D scanning services. Data is uploaded to a point cloud which can be used to make CAD models or 3D prints. The technology is intended to be used to diagnose problems or verify efficiency in the machinery of cruise ships. The company has partnered with 3Discovered that provides printing of the commercial grade parts that are required for the repair or maintenance. Supply is never a problem in that even parts that are obsolete can be printed. 3D Scanning AS is based out of Norway, but has offices located all over the world. It is a subsidiary of The Maritime Group of Norway.

3Discovered will be the parts supplier for 3D Scanning’s cruise ship division. Tore Enger, executive chairman of 3D Scanning AS said “Working with 3Discovered will allow us to source what we need, when we need it, and where we need it to better serve our cruise ship customers who are operating globally on very tight schedules.” Peer Munck, chief executive officer of 3Discovered said, “3Discovered is very excited to partner with 3D Scanning.

“Our distributed 3D printing fabrication platform makes a lot of sense for a geographically diverse operation such as 3D Scanning. A recognized innovator in its industry, 3D Scanning is again deploying the latest technologies and supply chain techniques in the most cost effective way to serve its customers and grow its business.”
