FIRE ALARM Cathay diverts to Bali

A Cathay Pacific flight from Perth to Hong Kong made an unscheduled emergency landing in Bali.  Passengers reported that the plane's engines caught fire following a 'hell of a bang'.  Cathay denied there was any fire.
"We can confirm that what witnesses saw was a light due to the engine failure, not a real fire", Cathay said in a statement.

"Safety remains Cathay Pacific's highest priority."

Passenger Joel Sirna said, "Mid-flight, we heard a loud bang and the plane started to shake. There were a few screams.

"All the lights went out and I looked out the window and saw some flames and sparks — the wing and the motor were on fire," he said.

Cathay Pacific flight CX170 landed safely in Bali.

All passengers were accommodated in local hotels or flew on to Hong Kong on alternative flights

Cathay Pacific and engine maker Rolls Royce are investigating.
