FAVOURITE SON George Bell back in Toronto promotes Dominican Republic

Baseball great George Bell was back Toronto as guest of honour at a cocktail reception given by the Dominican Republic Tourist Board. Bell signed baseballs, took photos with fans and shared news from the DR, one of Canada’s favorite sun destinations.

Bell was a huge favourite in the city when as part of the Toronto Blue Jays for 12 seasons, (1981, 1983-1990), his legendary batting helped lead the Jays to two American League Championships. Just one of his never-to-be-forgotten heroics - on April 4, 1988 - George Bell became the first big leaguer to belt three home runs on Opening Day (off Bret Saberhagen at Royals Stadium in Kansas City).
Now living in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic, Bell was happy to be back in the city he called home for so long.
Abdallah Castillo, director of the Dominican Republic Tourist Board, said the love of baseball is just one of the things the two countries have in common. “Toronto loves baseball. The Dominicans love baseball, and some of the world’s greatest players – men such as George Bell – are wonderful ambassadors for our country.
“This shared love of sport is just one of the strong ties between our people, and we are thrilled to celebrate these bonds with a summer celebration of all things Dominican.”
Last year, over one million Canadians visited the Dominican Republic – half of the number that went from the US, with ten times the population.
“The numbers speak for themselves. We are consistently one of the top overseas destinations for Canadians and we have a lot to celebrate,” said Castillo.
Guests enjoyed Dominican music, food and signature rum drinks on a sun drenched patio, with a chance to meet George Bell personally.
“Summer in Toronto is baseball season, and we wanted to thank our Canadian visitors for their support by giving them a chance to meet one of the greats of the sport.” Castillo said.
