"Airline passengers deserve to have access to clear and complete information about the airlines they choose to fly and to expect fair and reasonable treatment when they fly." That statement was delivered by the US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx following the announcement of new regulations by the Department of Transportation this week.

The DOT isssued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking allowing passengers to receive refunds on checked baggage fees when bags are delayed. Presently refunds are only warranted when luggage is lost.DOT will also look into the practice of airlines to post selected online travel agencies and metasearch engines that can display their fees. This hinders a consumer’s ability to effectively comparison shop believes Consumer Advocacy group Travelers United who sayd that it affects the free market. In contrast, industry trade organization Airlines for America, representing most US airlines, suggests that this new disclosure ruling will result in air travel costs going up."Airlines have different business models and must be allowed to continue offering optional services in a manner that makes sense for both their customers and their business," said A4A President and CEO Nicholas Calio.
"Efforts designed to reregulate how airlines distribute their products and services are bad for airline customers, employees, the communities we serve and our overall US economy."Transportation Secretary Foxx however said, "These actions will enable passengers to make well-informed decisions when arranging travel, ensure that airlines treat consumers fairly, and give consumers a voice in how airlines are regulated."
