Well to start this was my 2nd trip in 7 months to this resort and I must say I would return for a 3rd. When we went in Feb-2015 it was mine and my wife's 1st time to Cuba we just got back stayed Sept 25th-Oct 2nd and let me say this from all of the horror stories we had read none would apply to here. From the moment we arrived both times check in was swift, front desk staff is a true 1st impression Always smiling and inviting. The grounds had taken on a different appearance from when we were there in Feb all for the positive, the staff at the lobby bar were FANTASTIC. We upgraded to the diamond club on both occasions and I will say it's worth it our Butlers LEO and MARCOS ARE AMAZING We requested them this trip as we had them on our 1st trip. Ary who is from the main pool bar but do to a reno at the pool bar this time was at the diamond club pool, WOW what a AWESOME PERSON so GENUINE and the best DAMM BARTENDER I've ever met also drinks were top notch, as well as we had the pleasure to meet another member of the butler staff JOEL and can't say enough kind words for this man. Of course I can't forget YARIMA from the day time entertainment crew Love her. The night time entertainment was A best anywhere, from the magic show to the opera singers made the hair stand up on the back of the neck so smooth and amazing, the food in Feb was great this time a little disappointment but maybe do to off season, You have to go and visit Tonia at the BBQ near the main pool the best Cuban Sandwich. Our maids Zaly and O Daly for the week were TOP NOTCH. the rooms were clean, clean, and clean the A/C in room was fair, but they are just starting to upgrade all A/c on the whole property. Will be returning sometime in the fall of 2016

“Amazing vacation”

Our vacation at this resort was heaven on earth! Our time was spent in a Garden-view Junior Suite with a private balcony. It was extremely clean and had all the amenities we required (except internet access). We found the service at the resort to be outstanding! The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. The meals at the various restaurants were excellent! The entertainment, both day and night, was excellent. My wife has already told me, when next we come to Varadero, this is the only resort she wants to stay at!

The strong points Service. Cleanliness of the resort. Location of the resort (not far from the airport) and the beach(beachfront). Variety of food. Entertainment. In summary, it was excellent value for money. The weak points We were there for an entire week and couldn't get a coconut water ( and it wasn't for a lack of trying!) However, one of their friendly butlers gave us a couple mangoes after we requested them!

“Avoid at all costs”

Paradise lost We stayed at the Royalton Hicacos between Feb 19 and Feb 26 – it was a week of pure paradise. No, wait, that's wrong. –-------------- The good: --------------- Rapid check in, admittedly nobody asked us about room preferences (a nice touch at most 5* and lacking here, but that was fine) . We were served champagne on arrival which was ok. Sunwing rep meeting was lovely and smooth, Mynyelvis was lovely, witty and helpful (thank you!). So far so good. Dinners were pre-booked, but this was fine and changing them from 8pm to a time that was more suited to us was no issue at all. Beach was beautiful and was being constantly cleaned (by a tractor and one guy with a bucket....perhaps he could have used some help from the 3 (!!!) people that spent 2 days painting a railing close to the bistro. The beach servers were outstanding, (thank you Duniel & David). The third guy wearing the uniform but no tray, who was constantly walking behind the guys with the trays was a bit creepy... El Carib: Courteous staff, beautiful architecture, good food in general. Beach restaurant had decent food and polite staff (thank you Ernesto & Lisette). Drinks were never watered down, quite the contrary. Main bar was good, (Darynya, Yanya, Francesco-thanks [sorry if I got your names wrong!] for your professionalism and care). I finally managed to get one of those perfect sunsets in a picture, something I've tried to do many a time on a number of islands but somehow it never happened. –-------------- The bad: --------------- The rooms were a bit dated, but I understand they are renovating. The beds however weren't bad, they were nigh unusable. I like a firm bed, but this was like sleeping on lumpy concrete(my back is still hurting three days after we returned to safety), with pillows which showed their age (I enjoy scalp massages too, though not when I'm trying to get to was like the damn thing was filled with fists). The plastic mattress pad (like you would find in a hospital) wasn't ideal either as it ensured that we were both cold and sweaty at all times. I understand that it's there to make the staff's life easier, but this is supposed to be a 5* locale. We didn't complain about this because we wanted to enjoy our vacation and not nit pick – cumulatively it was all a bit much though (see below). One of the pillows had two pillowcases on it (which was fine, except for the fact that the interior pillow case was dirty and full of previous guests's makeup. – nearly deserves its own category. Nearly inedible for the most part, often undercooked (think literally raw meat in parts). Very obviously canned food also for the most part, vegetables were gray, mushy, and lifeless. The strong, pervasive, taste of chemical preservatives was unwelcome. The gelatinous film that forms on tinned food was also very unwelcome (I could understand it at a youth hostel for $20/night, here I can't). I was overjoyed to find fresh food when I came back. Fruit was also severely lacking, for example the first Mangos I managed to find were at Zehr's on arrival back in Canada. Las Morla's had ok grilled langoustine, as for the rest of the fish – pretty fishy(could tell by the smell coming from the other tables). We were told on several occasion – at the a la carte restaurants- that the listed food was unavailable, so expect your selection to be limited. The buffet was anemic, and just not good. Canned Spam is not 5* resort food, ever. We ended up eating boiled potatoes with fries as a side (literally, in the proper sense of the word). Cleanliness was lacking. Glasses (at the buffet and Italian restaurant) had to be held up to the window and it took a good few tries to find a glass that was at a level even resembling washed. Plates weren't that bad. Generally it looked good on the surface, but as soon as you looked too close the veneer of paradise peeled away. As an example of this, I sat on one of the white couches at the bar and leaned my elbow on the top of the back cushion. BIG mistake, clearly nobody ever thought of raising the cushions and cleaning beneath them, I dread to think what's under them....especially given they're at a bar. --------------- The ugly: --------------- Tipping. Seriously. We've been to resorts before in other countries and we understand how tipping works. With a lot of staff it seems they expected tips before they did anything and if it wasn't forthcoming, then neither was service. Tips are a bonus for a job well done, not an extra service fee required before any work is even started. One night when we were ready to go to sleep and removed the blanket and cover from the bed we had the shock of discovering fresh (though thank God already dried) blood and semen on the new sheets (I don't think it appropriate to post the pictures here, if you want them, send me a message and I'll send them to you- we were explained that the semen was some kind of laundry chemical and that sometimes the bedsheets come like that back from the laundry...however, the maid saw through the poor excuse and got a better one for the blood at least...saying that the day maid might have had a cut from a broken glass...oh, well). It was about 1am when we discovered that and went to the lobby to speak with somebody from the management. We offered to go on the spot to a doctor of the resorts' choice to have our blood and other bodily fluids examined so they could be compared to what was on the bed sheet...however, that was not necessary, as the staff believed us. The night staff was co-operative (thank you Mr. Marcos and the beautiful blond girl at the reception, both obviously embarrassed by the incident) but it took until almost 4am to solve the issue. We were asked what we wanted to make it up to us, we said we would “sleep” on it. In the morning we decided that all we wanted was late check out for the next day since we had a late flight. Surprisingly however, nobody knew of the issue, it was as thought it had never happened (as far as the resort was concerned). We had to re-run through the previous night's experiences repeatedly before someone decided they might try to accommodate our request. We were told (at 3-4pm) by the butler that it was fine and that we could check out at 3pm instead of 12pm but we would need to have our key cards reprogrammed. This was fine by us. In the morning (6.30am !!!) we received a call saying “Lady, are you leaving today?”... When we went to get the keys re-programmed the next day nobody knew of it, again and we were told it wouldn't be possible, and as for our 6.30am call we received a shrug and disinterested look. We were even interrogated with a “Who told you you can stay?!”. It could be bad luck, an isolated incident, but certainly it was a particularly bad one. Thank you Mr. Yedzia (sorry again for the misspelling) for solving an issue that was solved previously and in a customer oriented setting would not have needed further intervention. Big brother is watching. Pay a bit of attention and you'll see the secret police hanging around the resort, people who stay in one single position all day observing, and listening to everything being said. Maybe this is just me, but the proverbial men in black standing in one (inconspicuous) position all day who do nothing but watch and listen (though are staff, and happy to help if asked) are a bit creepy. Take it from people who know, a well trained “man in black” is invisible to the guests. To top it all off, there was one day that the food at the buffet was decent and the service plentiful, that day was Monday, the day a sombre man with a clipboard and pen was walking around the resort. The staff on that day was neatly aligned on two rows at the entrance of the buffet/lunch time and even clapped their hands when somebody was entering the premises, however not one of them thought about interrupting the clapping and seating us... --------------- The weird: --------------- While dinning at “El Viejo y El Mar Beach Grill“ my wife needed to use the toilet...for the first time in my life I encounter such dedication from the cleaning staff who decided that the best time to mop the floors were when she was sited on the toilet, the mop being fitted in the stall through the space between the door and the floor...dangerous situation, since she was wearing white suede sandals and didn't want them mopped... As a loving goodbye from the resort, my wife also used the women's toilet at the Club House – second stall, to be precise – the toilet paper dispenser is pretty high on the wall and the attempt of removing some toilet paper from it ended up in her getting a hit on her head from the closer half of the dispenser, which obviously didn't like being approached in any way. --------------- The end: --------------- Maybe it was bad luck, but one thing is for sure, our trip has spoiled Cuba for us, and we won't be back for a considerable amount of time, and even if we do return, it won't be here.

The strong points Rapid check in Drinks never watered down The weak points Lacking cleanliness. Dirty glasses at some restaurants. Dirty (supposedly fresh) bed sheets.

“Cuban fun”

Check in was fast. Unfortunately we got a room close to the generator in the 1700 block. The next day the front desk moved us to a nice room in the 600 block where we could hear the ocean. did like the service and food at the caribe, the people working around the resort were so friendly, did not like the service and the upgraded wine list thown in my face at the seafood restaurant, I hope they correct this.

The strong points The beach, large rooms, good food, people. Caribe restaurant, buffet restaurant The weak points The generator by the 1700 block, upgraded wine menu and service at the Seafood restaurant.

“Hotel only as good as the staff who run it !”

You may have modern facilities, you may have plenty of staff running around looking like their busy. However, your resort is only as good as the staff who work there. That is our observation of the Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa. We stayed there one week , January 9-16 2015. Everything for the most part looks very clean and pristine. I was told by one guest to " lower my expectations from 'other' places for quantity and selection and you will be fine " Why ? Is this not the highest rated Hotel in Varadero ? Did I not pay top price ? Does this not come with high expectations ? You betta ya it does ! Ok lets list the major deficiency that would disappoint one on a holiday . Number 1 is SURPRISE The food was not very good. They simply don't know how to cook meat, or the meat is too tough or of poor quality. More alarming though is how it is prepared, I witnessed cross contamination of meat by the cook at the main buffet. Prongs used for raw meat, were used to move meat on the grill. The same plate used to bring raw meat to the cooking grill is used over and over again instead of using a clean plate every time. When you point out the error, they use the I don't speak English excuse which I found predominantly throughout with the staff who served food . The 4 ala carte restuarants were also a waste of time , most of the food was of a standard below that of a typical roadhouse back home . Noting to write home about. Oh yes they have the ambiance and they can ply you with plenty of drinks, but we have all been to restaurants built on the outside and looking like a marvelous structures at home, only to go home disappointed because the food just does not taste right or it did not meet your expectations simply because the cook or chef is just not good enough and can't do the job to meet or exceed expectations. At one ala carte restaurant my wife ordered from the menu stuffed chicken breast, only to be served chicken strips. When we inquired, again the waitress could not communicate in English, but did know the word " sorry" What this resort needs is better trained staff, its only as good as its weakest link, and we found some weak links that are easy to correct. This staff needs to be better trained and just like they offer us a chance to learn Spanish, the staff need to be able to communicate effectively in English . I'm not talking about the office staff being better at communicating effectively in English, I'm talking about Kitchen staff, waiters and waitresses. Waiters and waitresses are all looking for tips, tipping is not mandatory, however if the weak link is namely the quality of the food, where does one draw the line, tipping for good service or tipping for quality food and good service. The top resort in Cuba should be held to the top standards by paying customers ipso facto. Everything else is fantastic about this resort, the property, the beach, the drinks, the entertainment, these are all very good. They assign you a Butler when you arrive, the Butler sees to your personal needs. However Butlers too are only as good as the weakest link in the chain. Hopefully the owners of this resort will read my comments so those who come after me can get the quality of food they deserve and that they have dearly paid for ! Room Tip: They have plenty of staff rolling carts all over the place. These carts have metal wheels that echo... See more room tips Stayed January 2015, travelled as a couple

The strong points the property, the beach, the drinks, the entertainment, these are all very good. The weak points The food was not very good. They simply don't know how to cook meat, or the meat is too tough or of poor quality

“Fantastic Service, Food & Beach!”

We have travelled all over cuba for many years, different places, different hotels. This was our first adults only hotel (I went w my sister) and the staff and food were spectacular. This particular resort was shocking in its perfect food, services and staff. The beaches in Cuba are generally awesome, as was this one. Same old entertainment that all other resort hotels but slightly more exciting than others we've been to. Not much going on after that (11pm). BUT! you have Varadero right there, providing lots of safe adventures byway of nightlife or daytime shopping. We loved it! PS: Internet costs extra! BAD. That was surprise. Not expensive but still. But once you pay you have your internet all over the facilities. GOOD.

The strong points Beach, food, services, amenities, bathroom, staff. The weak points Internet. Coasts extra!

“Good but not good”

My wife was sick on first flight ever and flight attendants acted like 15 year old girls complete with jumping up and down. Paid for the catermeran dolphin excursion...was ok except snorkling was advertised and when we went my wife and I were scared because the current was very strong and all the people that took part (25-30) were desperatly trying to swim and cling on to each other to stay afloat. My wife and I were terrified someone may pull us underwater. Many people were clinging on to ropes and I was personally scratched and kicked by others trying to cling to the vessel.

The strong points Because of the dolphin excursion experience I will probably not book with sunning again. I had other offers at the resort but purchased sunning because I believed that safety would be top of mind... I was wrong. The weak points I own and operate a industrial marine delivery business so I understand the marine atmosphere, experienced accidents and to tell you the truth I have never been so scared as the dolphin excursion snorkelling activity.

“Amazing Food and Beach”

Food and beach were amazing and we always felt safe. Most important points for us. Jeep tour was great. 24hr restaurant and bar. Great service in restaurants and maids. Bad odour throughout the resort one night. No safe key available when we asked but we only asked once. Pool was a bit cool but it was their wintertime. Disco and piano Bar under reno right now but they will be very nice.

We came with 18 friends/relatives to this resort, 12 from Toronto, and 6 from Vancouver. My husband and I have been to Cuba 6 times already, and to different hotels each time. we love the people in Cuba, as they are so genuinely humble and treat us Canadians like friends the rooms were clean, and the staff at the breakfast /lunch were wonderful ! especially Dania/ and Adan ! The food was fine, lots of choices, and the liquor was very high quality, especially the "12 yr old Santiago de Cuba" rum, which we were introduced to by the bartender - Fernando . "SANDY" from the animation team taught "dance lessons" , and "NELLIE" was wonderful in teaching us the "AQUAFIT" ! the butlers were very helpful/also front desk staff very friendly !

The strong points the drinks were good, especially "MIAMI VICE" and the 12 year old rum "SANTIAGO DE CUBA" , and the staff were excellent , bar waiter "CARLOS" , restaurant staff -Dania, Adan, Mercedes , animation team "SANDY" and "NELLIE" The weak points The food was to be expected , but we not particularly picky!
