WINTER BLAST Nova Scotia and PEI Digging out

Posted on 01/18/2016 | About Prince Edward Island

Crews were cleaning up Sunday after an intense winter storm dumped more than 40 centimetres of snow and ice pellets on parts of Nova Scotia. Most flights at Halifax Stanfield International Airport were cancelled on Saturday and there were numerous delays and cancellations over the weekend.

Environment Canada says Antigonish Harbour was one of the hardest hit areas of the province, with 43 centimetres recorded in the northeastern community. The national weather forecaster says other parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island received between 15 and 30 centimetres. Nova Scotia's Transportation Department says many rural roads are still snow-covered but passable.

Police in the region were reporting a number of minor accidents and were urging people to stay off roads or drive with extreme caution. Up to 25 centimetres of snow fell on parts of the region earlier this week, creating power outages, school closures and poor driving conditions.
