NEW SOUTHERN DESTINATIONS A matter of perspective

Travellers flying between Ottawa and Iqaluit and Halifax and Iqaluit will soon have another airline option. Canadian start-up Fly Sarvaq will start service in May to offer what they suggest is a more cost effective way for Nunavummiut to travel to these southern destinations.

The air transportation service is a partnership between Iqaluit’s Sarvaq Logistics and Nolinor Aviation. "We identified a need that we saw, and with the model that we have we think we can make it work," said Brian Tattuinee, spokesperson for Fly Sarvaq. "We are confident that once we launch, Nunavummiut and Maritimers who want a more cost-efficient way to travel will book with us." Direct service between Ottawa and Iqaluit will operate on Mondays and Fridays. Service between Halifax and Iqaluit will be on Fridays. At present, there are no direct flights between the latter two cites. Although the prices are not yet posted on the website, the company said their introductory ticket price will be $499 one-way including tax and fees. Tickets go on sale March 1. A Boeing 737-200 will be operated for scheduled flights that will begin May 6. Intentionally the airline wants to expand opportunities from the metropolitan cities to the north. “This opportunity strengthens the bridge between our two regions, and we are excited to share the news with businesses across our province,” said Laurel Broten with Nova Scotia Business Inc.
