Expect 2017 to be particularly festive in Montreal. Having received an unprecedented number of tourists last year, the city could be celebrating tourism numbers. But the year also marks the city’s 375th anniversary, 150 years of Canada’s Confederation and 50 years since Expo67. All pointed out by Yves Lalumière, president and chief executive officer of Tourism Montreal.

In 2015 visitors to Montreal increased by 3.1 percent over the year before, bringing the total to 9.6 million people who spent $2.9 billion over the year. 73 cruise ships stopped in Montreal, 29 more than in the previous year. Trudeau airport handled 15 million passengers, which is a 4.6 percent increase over the previous year That is the largest number of people to ever go through the terminal. Hotels enjoyed an average 73 percent occupancy rate, 1.8 percent more than in 2014, and an average 9 percent increase in revenues. With this kind of precedent and all of the other celebrations for the city, Tourism Montreal expects the city to grow visitor numbers to 10 million in 2017.
