Montreal’s Old Port will be the recipient of funds promised by municipal and provincial authorities. The tired Alexandra Pier and the Iberville passenger terminal will be upgraded in time for the 2017 cruise season with a cost estimated at $78 million.

The Government of Quebec will allocate $20 million through its Maritime Strategy – Tourism Component, while the City of Montreal will provide $15 million. The remaining $43 million will come from the Montreal Port Authority (MPA).

Montreal’s mayor Denis Coderre said, “The restored facilities of Alexandra Pier and Iberville Passenger Terminal will let us extend a magnificent welcome to the tourists and visitors who will come celebrate Montreal’s 375th anniversary with us in 2017.

” The Old Port is a tourist zone visited by about 7 million tourists annually. About 91,000 cruisers and crew members visited last year. “The Montreal Port Authority wishes to express its deepest gratitude to its financial partners, the Government of Quebec and the City of Montreal, without whom this project would not have been possible,” said Sylvie Vachon, Montreal Port Authority’s president and CEO. “These improved infrastructures will meet clients’ needs and give Montrealers renewed access to our majestic St. Lawrence River for 2017, a year brimming with symbols and festivities for Montreal.

” During the renovations, cruise ships will dock at Port of Montreal facilities east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Shuttle buses will transport passengers to the tourist spots.
