DASHED DREAMS

The MS Saint Laurent which sailed the St Lawrence River on a Canada-New England programme this past summer has been grounded. The one ship operator Haimark Line filed for chapter 11 protection.

The ship was going to pioneer the hybrid river-oceans cruises for the company with departures scheduled throughout North and South America for the 2015-2016 season.

The itineraries included a 10-day Historic St Lawrence and America’s Five Great Lakes voyages between Montreal and Chicago with departures starting in July.

The vessel originally sailed as the Cape May Light but got a name change after a $3.5 million facelift.

The company recently announced intentions to sail to Cuba.

In a statement the company said Haimark and the ship’s owners are currently working to resolve insurance issues stemming from the incident in which the ship incurred damages in the St. Lawrence Seaway last June. (All damages have been repaired.)

Haimark is a major player in the Asian river cruise market. This does not affect the operation of those vessels.
