Few details are being released about a 40 year old male who was arrested at the Berlin Tegel Airport after flying from Miami to join an AIDA cruise ship. The man had been employed with the cruise industry for five years and has been charged by police for impersonating a cruise ship doctor.

The suspect is apparently educated as a nurse, but has worked on cruise ships as a doctor for five years. The Berliner Morgenpost reported that the man falsely claimed that he specialized in anesthesia and intensive care. Hansjörg Kunze, VP Communication at AIDA Cruises reported that when the cruise line learned that the cruise doctor had falsified his credentials they contacted the police in Berlin and that “Only then we learned that investigations in this case have been going on for months already.” As a matter of course we are verifying the CVs of our applicants thoroughly.”

AIDA has reported that the cruise line contacted the former employer before hiring this individual who confirmed his reported employment record. He provided AIDA with a license to practice medicine. Kunze said, “Obviously, we are not the only ones who have been deceived extremely. In the interest of our guests, we will evaluate very quickly all information available to us and give a full support to the investigative authorities.” It is estimated that several hundred patients were treated by the fake doc over the five years.

The case is currently under investigation.
