A Boeing 777 flying on its way to Miami was diverted to Halifax yesterday due to an on-board medical issue. The spokeswoman for the Halifax airport says flight American Airlines flight 39 flying from London, England, landed shortly after 1 p.m. local time.

Ashley Gallant says the aircraft was expected to depart early in the afternoon to continue its journey.

She says the person on board was taken off and provided with medical care.

Gallant says she wasn't aware of how many people were on the aircraft.

The spokeswoman says it's common to have the diversions to the Halifax airport due to its location near a number of international routes, but it's unusual to have such a large aircraft land at the airport.
