“Beautiful island, but beautiful hotel???”

The island was stunning. The water so turquoise and clear. The planes were very cool. The hotel was okay, old, a bit run down but staff were mostly unfriendly. Kids were not treated very well. Only three restaurants and one was closed on Monday without telling us. Twice a pipe burst and we had no water for a couple hours. Would go back for the beach and water not the hotel!!

The strong points The beach and water were amazing! Rent a car to tour the island fun and safe! The weak points Under staffed not very friendly, shows at night were pretty sad, pipes bursting, restaurants closed or not getting what you ordered and no seafood on an island??? Disco from across the stree pumping music we could here in the room until 2 am!

“SONESTA MAHO BEACH”

1)No written info available about the site. Had to constantly ask where things were. 2)WATER - Told not to drink tap water on second day, not on arrival. 3)STAFF - seemed angry. No smiles or conversation - supposed to be "friendly" island. Very inefficient. 4)FOOD - not cooked well. One restaurant, 2 names. Different themes, but same menu. Many went off site to eat 5)NOISE - Bar on street below, loud noise until 2:00 am. Asked to change rooms, not possible. 6)POOL - Too cold. Very few swimming. 7)SMELL - Sewage smell around property. 8)Tour guide not very knowledgeable about island. 9)VIEW FROM ROOM. Tarpaper roof. 10)Basically no water front beach. 11)BEACH CHAIRS. Towels on chairs to hold and not used all day. Not enough chairs available. Not monitored.

The strong points None to mention. The weak points See above Not recommended

“Sonesta Maho Beach”

Nice hotel. Food was good. Service was quick. Staff were pleasant. Only negative was our room - it smelled from the sewage system we faced. We couldn't open our patio door or use it. The system was very noisy and smelled really bad.

The strong points The food, location and staff at the hotel were great The weak points Our room was at the back where there is a waste management plant, we couldn't open our sliding door or use our balcony, it was very noisy and smelled.

“Great location”

The hotel is in a great spot, in the middle of a lot of action with discos and casinos. The hotel over all looks tired. It needs some renovations in the rooms and especially the pool. The buffet is ok, different menu everyday but they do need improvement with the restaurants menu. They cant have the same menu day after day, that needs to change. The staff their are a few sour lemons but that is the same everywhere. over all with a few renovations and improvements this place will draw a lot of people.

The strong points The pros, location.Luckily Mullet bay is a 7 min walk away! The weak points The cons, pool, beach and a la carte restaurants.

“Sonesto Maho”

Nice but needs a face lift. After staying at a 5 star resort last year, it easy to establish the difference between a 4 star rated resort to a 5 star ultra luxury resort. Food was excellent but buffet became monotonous after the third day. Sun wing advertises deluxe ocean view room.....well 4th floor facing the Royal Islander Club building does not constitute deluxe ocean view to me or my family. We requested a higher room and were provided a 8th floor room which would represent a persons expectation of ocean view.

The strong points Location The weak points Staff need some customer service training and seemed to be fighting amongst each other.

“Loved the Sonesta Maho”

We were just at the Sonesta Maho from September 4th to 11th and were not disappointed. It was our first trip to St. Maarten but doubt that it will be our last. Having a read a number of negative reviews & complaints prior to going about unpleasant staff I was a bit apprehensive, but let me tell you, we did not experience this. Perhaps it has something to do with the way the naysayers treat people or their unreasonable expectations. Did every single staff person always have a smile on their face? No. But, I don't think that you would find anyone, anywhere that does. Overall, we found staff very friendly, helpful & pleasant. Briande & Kerlande, the hostesses (& their supervisor, sorry don't remember her name) at the Palms Grill buffet especially come to mind. My husband needs to be out of the direct sun & they only needed to be told this once. Every time we arrived to be seated for breakfast/lunch, they remembered and gave us a table in the shade. Thanks ladies!! We have no complaints about the buffet food, good variety & all very tasty. My favourite meal was at the Point Restaurant where we enjoyed "al fresco" dining one evening with exceptional service & possibly one of the best pasta dishes I have had anywhere. The Ascot Pub was great too. Our room was the "deluxe" and suited us just fine. On the 7th floor, we overlooked the service area (water filtration plant) so there was a constant "hum" but we also had a view of the ocean and golf course. Just fine with us!! No noise inside when the doors were closed. & not a peep all night. Had some of the best sleeps I've had in a long time. The room was always well cleaned by the housekeeping staff & great amenities provided. Nice to have a stocked mini fridge as well. We requested diet pop & this was always provided. Absolutely loved the beach. Great for swimming, people watching & of course watching the planes come in. My only complaint would be the lack of shade provided by the umbrellas. The hotel provides lots of them, but at certain times of the day they don't give enough shade. Not the fault of the hotel, but rather, mother nature. It just meant that we had to leave the beach & go in search of shade in or near the pool....tough huh! lol Great location. Close to the airport & an easy ride to town. Don't take a cab. Take the bus. Walk out front, wave down a "bus" (really a van) that says "Philipsburg" and pay $2.00 (per person). Loved the resort & St. Maarten and hope to be back soon.

The strong points Close proximity to the airport. Easy to get to Philipsburg. Food variety/quality. Beach. The weak points Not enough shade provided by the umbrellas on the beach. Only a concern if sensitive to direct sunshine.

“Great overall experience at sonesta maho”

Our overall experience was great at the sonesta. Food was good, most of the staff was friendly and helpful, the resort is well located and it is easy to get downtown or to the port if you need to. I would definitely say the beaches on the island sell this resort further as you cannot compare Mexico beaches to this island.

The strong points The strong points were definitely that there was easy access to the beach, food available around the clock and the staff being helpful. They explained how to use busses which made travelling a fraction of the price of what a taxi would cost. The weak points The sonesta could use an update on its look, some of the wait staff was rude at times and there isnt enough variety is planned nightime activities. Their maa la carte menus also did not change which meant they served the same food all week.

“A great time”

The hotel staff was great. Our rooms were cleaned twice a day, once in the afternoon for the major clean up, and then they had a turn down service at night to refresh our towels and put chocolates on our pillows. I felt very pampered the whole time.

The strong points The food and service was amazing. I've never eaten so well on an all inclusive before. The weak points the view from the basic room was a little disappointing...the back of a golf course

“Great hotel”

This vacation was a very relaxing and enjoyable one, would recommend

The strong points Great location, great food and great accommodation, lovely landscaping, well taken care property. Staff very friendly and helpful Free bottled water, beer and soft drinks in the room's mini-fridge Several bars and restaurants open most of the day. The weak points Inet access only in lobby and it worked 60% the time, any other inet in any other common area and in the room was $16.99 a day!!. Smoking allowed in the bar in the lobby and it carries around the entire lobby making it very uncomfortable in some areas.
