WEATHER ROUND UP

Posted on 09/06/2016 | About Hawaii

There’s been some wild weather the past week and it’s not over yet. Tropical storms and hurricanes are playing (or have played) havoc with Florida, the east coast of North America and Hawaii, and now hurricane Newton is heading for Mexico’s Baja California region.

Canadian Government Advisory for Mexico’s west coast
Global Affairs Canada has issued a travel advisory as the hurricane heads toward the Baja California peninsula as hurricane Newton threatens to strike the region.
The agency says Canadians should avoid all non-essential travel to the coastline between Cabo San Lazaro and Loreto.
The advisory says Canadians living or travelling in the region should monitor local news and weather reports, follow the advice of local authorities and find out whether the storm will disrupt travel arrangements.
Newton was located about 350 kilometres southeast of Cabo San Lucas on Monday evening. The storm was moving northwest at 26 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h.
The government of Mexico has issued a Hurricane Warning for the west coast of the Baja California Sur from north of Puerto Cortes to Cabo San Lazaro.
Coastal portions of five Mexican states could see 13 to 25 centimetres of rain, with isolated maximums of 38 centimetres.
Newton is expected to cross over the peninsula and re-enter the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, on Wednesday.
The hurricane centre says the storm is likely to continue north into Arizona as a tropical depression later in the week.
Hermine kicks up stiff winds in Long Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts
Hermine's stiff winds and dangerous rip currents threatened eastern Massachusetts Monday, while cruise ship passengers were reeling from a wild ride in rough seas.
A tropical storm warning for New York City was canceled early Monday, but warnings remained in effect along the eastern coast of Long Island, as well as for Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the islands.

Double Trouble in Hawaii
Hawaii hunkered down as two hurricanes threatened to hit the islands over the weekend.
Oahu, Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe were under a hurricane watch Friday as Hurricane Lester surged closer to the islands. Hurricane Madeline threatened the Big Island earlier in the week but was downgraded to a tropical storm and passed without causing major damage.
Lester weakened to a Category 2 but was expected to remain a hurricane as it passes north of the islands Saturday and Sunday, said meteorologist Bob Burke of the National Weather Service. Large waves from 15 to 25 feet are expected to pound east-facing shores of major islands.
