UNITED KEEPING MECHANICS BUSY

United Airlines was about to take off from Tampa to Houston on Monday when a tire blew. The pilot reportedly hit the brakes and the plane skidded along the runway, trailing smoke and fire. There were no injuries in that incident - nor in the second one involving United, when a hard landing at Newark’s Liberty International Airport caused ceiling panels to fall in the aisles on Wednesday.

Monday’s incident involved a Boeing 737 at Tampa International Airport, where passengers watched as firefighters discharged foam to douse the fire. Wednesday’s incident involved a Boeing 737 as well. Passengers describe a number of hard landing attempts at Newark, with the aircraft bouncing on the runway and then lifting off the ground, circling the area for half an hour. Flight attendants, who were buckled into their seats for landing, rushed down the aisle to check on everyone when ceiling panels fell to the floor. The breakage exposed insulation and wiring.

While the pilot aborted the landing an announcement welcomed the passengers to Newark. When the plane landed safely grateful passengers applauded and the pilot apologized for the incident.
