EXPECT DELAYS FROM WINTER STORM Newfoundland braced for heavy snow and strong winds

If your travelling to Newfoundland today, you could be in for delays or cancellations. The calendar may say late April, but it will seem like the dead of winter, with Environment Canada issuing a winter storm warning for much of the province.

The mix of strong winds and heavy snow may reduce visibility and the weather agency suggests non-essential travel be postponed until conditions improve.

Snow and strong northerly winds are expected throughout the day ahead of a storm approaching from the east. The northeast coast can expect 25 to 35 centimetres of snow over inland sections, with lesser amounts along the coast, while the northern Avalon peninsula and Green Bay areas will likely receive up to 15 centimetres.

Adding to the snowy blast will be strong winds expected to gust to between 80 and 110 kilometres per hour during the afternoon and evening.

The precipitation is expected to taper off to flurries or drizzle by Thursday morning.
