American Airlines flight 438 had just taken off from Dallas to Seattle on Wednesday when people in Arlington and Grand Prairie Texas called police and fire departments to report a flaming plane in the sky.

There were 130 passengers and six crewmembers on board the flight when some people reported hearing a large boom and then seeing flames by the turbines on the wing of the Airbus A321.
The Fort Worth based carrier has said that there was a problem with the engine compressor on the left side engine, but it was not the engine that was on fire. “The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate on it’s own power,” said American spokesman Ross Feinstein.
Feinstein said none of the 136 passengers and crew was injured when Flight 438 to Seattle returned to Dallas about 20 minutes after takeoff Wednesday night.
A Federal Aviation Administration statement says the pilot reported an engine problem causing compressor stalls, which discharged flames from the back of the engine.
Feinstein says the left-side engine of the Airbus 321 was not on fire, despite the flames, and that the engine remained operational as the aircraft landed.
Passengers were given hotel accommodations and rebooked for flights on Thursday.
