CELEBRATIONS GET A GREEN LIGHT 190 major landmarks and sites celebrate Ireland and St Patrick and Ireland

Posted on 03/17/2016 | About Ireland

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all our Irish and wannabe Irish readers. Wherever you are chances are you can celebrate the day as some 190 iconic landmarks and sites around the world will be illuminated in green over the coming days as part of Tourism Ireland’s 2016 Global Greening initiative to celebrate the island of Ireland and St Patrick. This year, like last, Liam Neeson is joining Tourism Ireland to promote a one minute film, narrated by the actor promoting the Emerald Island.

Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland’s chief executive officer, said of Neeson, “He is an enormously popular, global personality and I am confident that this film will be seen and shared by people across the world – inspiring them to put the island of Ireland on their holiday wish-list for 2016. It’s a fun and innovative way to get people talking about the destination.

Neeson said, “I’m delighted to be helping Tourism Ireland celebrate St Patrick’s Day. It will be wonderful to see the world turn green again on March 17 as nations come together to celebrate the fun and warmth of the Irish.”From Rome to Rio and from London to Las Vegas, a host of buildings and sites around the world are turning a shade of green to celebrate our national day. New sites taking part in 2016 include 7 World Trade Center at Ground Zero in New York, Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Yas Viceroy hotel in Abu Dhabi and the Nelson Mandela statue in Johannesburg.

They are joined by some ‘old favourites’ which have gone green in previous years – including the Colosseum in Rome, the Sacré Cœur basilica in Paris, the Great Wall of China, Niagara Falls and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. In Canada, several sites will join the Global Greening celebrations including the “green lantern” of the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, a host of properties in Montreal, including Montreal City Hall, Tour McGill College and Olympic Stadium; and lighting the sky emerald in St John’s, Newfoundland will be Cabot Tower on Signal Hill National Historic Site.

Toronto City Hall will again green its iconic towers, and new locations such as The Calgary Tower, the Toronto Sign, the Distillery District and Casa Loma will be joining in the festivities in 2016. Turbo the Goat, the adorable #RoyalGoat of the Royal Winter Fair who rose to popularity in Toronto in 2015, will also be joining in on the #GoGreen4PatricksDay fun!    Tourism Ireland’s annual Global Greening initiative has gone from strength to strength – from its beginning in 2010, with just the Sydney Opera House and the Sky Tower in Auckland going green, to this year, with some 190 sites taking part.

Gibbons  said, “This is the seventh year of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative and it’s bigger and better than ever this year, with some wonderful new additions like 7 World Trade Center in New York, the Boston Red Sox, the light rail system in Addis Abba and even an opera house in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.“St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us; our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people around the world and to convey the message that Ireland offers the warmest of welcomes and great fun, as well as wonderful scenery and heritage.

“Our St Patrick’s programme spans Great Britain, Mainland Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, as well as emerging tourism markets like China, India, Brazil, the Middle East and South Africa. We are using every opportunity to capitalise on Ireland’s heightened profile this week; the saturation coverage about Ireland across the global airwaves, in newspapers and digital media, is an invaluable boost for our overall 2016 tourism promotional drive.” LANDMARKS AND ICONIC SITES AROUND THE WORLD JOINING TOURISM IRELAND’S ‘GLOBAL GREENING’ FOR ST PATRICK’S DAY 2016
