AN ESCORT THROUGH THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE

When the Crystal Serenity sails through the Northwest Passage from Anchorage on August 16, she will be joined by RRS Ernest Shackleton, an ICE 05 classed icebreaker operated by British Antarctic Survey, providing safety and operational support to the 1,070-passenger luxury cruise ship.

The escort vessel has Northwest Passage experience and will be outfitted with two helicopters (for ice reconnaissance and emergency use), high-tech communications equipment, tools for oil pollution containment and even survival rations.

Crystal Serenity will be upgraded with forward-looking sonar, ice detection radar and an ice navigation system. The bridge team is receiving ice navigation training, and ice pilots will board both Crystal Serenity and Ernest Shackleton for the journey.

"We have been planning this historic sailing for more than two years, working closely with expedition experts from EYOS-Expeditions, as well as Transport Canada, the US and Canadian Coast Guards and local agencies along the route to ensure the ultimate safety and a most memorable experience for our guests," says Crystal president and CEO, Edie Rodriguez in a press release.

"The RRS Ernest Shackleton's assistance in navigating this region will only enhance the safety of our voyage."

The crew of Ernest Shackleton will be prepared for shore adventures, carrying zodiacs for “wet landings” as well as helicopter flightseeing, kayaking, and speed boat rides.
